CHAPTER SIX
Leigh was dreaming, floating on a soft pink cloud of contentment which made her want to purr. Languorously she stretched and turned over, pulling the blankets around her in a warm cocoon of bliss. She drifted back on to the cloud and smiled.
Abruptly there was noise, making her jump violently in an instinctive, reaction against the shrill intrusion that smashed into her consciousness like a brick through a plate glass window. For a moment she was totally disorientated. She shook her head and screwed up her eyes, struggling to wake. Where was she? The noise continued to penetrate as she clawed her way from sleep and realised it was the telephone. She put out a meandering hand and eventually her fingers closed around the receiver and dragged it to her ear.
'Hello?'
'Hello, my beautiful girl. Did you sleep well?'
She muttered something incoherent and Jake laughed.
'Wake up, Leigh! It's eight o'clock. Hurry and get dressed. I'll collect you for breakfast in fifteen minutes. We'll have to get a move on, the meeting's at ten.'
'Okay.' Dropping the receiver haphazardly back on to its cradle, she staggered from the bed and into the bathroom. With a great surge of willpower she switched on the shower, turned the dial to cold and stood beneath it. The impact of the icy water made her gasp. She picked up the soap and began lathering herself briskly. Then, like a thunderbolt, the realisation of what she had done the night before swamped her.
Leigh's elation vanished. Abruptly her hands stopped their work and she gave a tortured groan. How could she have been so abandoned, so wanton, as to allow her wayward emotions to carry her away completely? A queasy feeling of despair infiltrated her being, making her lean against the tiled wall, her heart palpitating like a wild thing. Why on earth had she allowed Jake to make love to her? She must have been out of her mind! For two years she had kept her life on an even keel, but now it had tipped disastrously, and she was in danger of sinking into a sea of emotion, desire and unexpressed needs, when all she really wanted was to sit safely on the shore. And it wasn't as though Jake had had to coax her. He had deliberately offered her the opportunity to stop, which she had refused. Her face grew hot with shame. She rinsed away the soap and began drying herself roughly with a white fluffy towel.
Casual sex had never been on her agenda. She was well aware that her strict moral standards could be interpreted as archaic in this day and age. Many of her girl friends would not consider a holiday complete without a romp with some attractive man, and Jake was certainly that. But she had never viewed sex in that light. To her it was an act of love which only took place between two people who cared for each other, who had built up a cherished relationship. Everything had happened too quickly with Jake, she didn't know whether she was on her head or her heels.
